The science of Astronomy
Astronomy
is my passion. I have always had a great fascination with the concept. Ever
since I was a little girl I have wanted to be an astronomer. There’s just
something mystical and gravitational about it that intellectually excites me. My
great enthusiasm for the science of astronomy impacts my life and relates to
some of my activities.
During my junior year, I took an introductory astronomy class. Our class was in the planetarium, which truly brought the class to life. I loved learning new topics and exploring space. We studied multiple concepts involving our universe and its functions. Participating in the class opened my eyes to a vast number of subtopics of astronomy, which generally helped me to pinpoint, specifically, what field I wanted to major in: astrophysics. Taking part in the course strengthened my aspiration and lifetime dream to become an astronomer. Ultimately, my compelling interest in astronomy helped to shape my career goals.
As a senior in high school I had the advantage of participating in Senior Project. Senior Project is a four week program, where senior students shadow a person who pursues a certain career. It is the student’s job to find a mentor who has an occupation similar to one the student desires to follow. I had the chance to shadow the Planetarium Manager at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. During the last month of school, I spent about 8 hours a day working at a job that fulfills my intellectual interest: astrophysics. It was great to have a hands-on experience, real-life practice. From this prospect I gained a better understanding and familiarity with astronomy, with its idea and with work involving it, all before the end of high school. Once I completed the program, I gave a presentation to my family, peers, and advisors over my learning experience.
Back at home, a fun activity that I have participated in is astronomical field trips; they are held at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. At these field trips, there are lectures given by professors and researchers, which are very informational. During one lecture an astronomy researcher told us about the planet Mars and the findings of its new rover, Curiosity. The features of the museum also add to the field trip’s excitement. I even had the opportunity to view Jupiter and its moons through the telescope in the observatory, seeing its rings and all. It was a mesmerizing experience. With a great curiosity for astronomy, I have learned how to incorporate this interest with different activities.
