Being in the band
How can a person change from an experience? Can it alter a
person’s personality? Whether the experience is insignificant or memorable, it
has the power to impact our lives. I have personally been influenced on more
than one occasion. However, there is one particular experience that has altered
my personality greatly; it has changed my values, eliminated some personal
fears, and escalated my sense of purpose. It has given me courage and pride in
myself. The significance of my experience may be of little value to others;
however, it’s incredibly important to me. I am a proud member of the Euclid High
School Marching Band. Marching band has undoubtedly contributed to the person that
I am today.
Being in the marching band is a unique involvement. I’ve played the alto saxophone since the start of my high school career. We perform at parades, festivals, sporting events, and other family functions. Marching band is a fantastic way to contribute back to the community. Although being in the band is enjoying, it requires a large amount of time, dedication, and effort. I have faced many challenges as a marching band member. With such a large group of people, I’ve had to learn to interact with various personalities. It became even more in depth when I became a Squad Leader. I was obligated to lead a group of my peers and give instructions. With this new responsibility, I advanced on my people skills, and developed my leadership capabilities. In addition, I continue to develop my fundamental and musical skills, which includes marching format, memorizing music, and executing drills accordingly. Marching band events can be challenging. Harsh weather conditions during events have resulted in people becoming ill, instruments being ruined, and performances being delayed. There are many sacrifices that I make; my weekends are spent performing and attending various functions. Under those circumstances, I still manage to stay on top of schoolwork and home responsibilities. Obviously, participating in the band program has, indeed, been challenging; however, it has its rewards. I, through my band experience, have gained knowledge and skills that will last a lifetime. With so many great people to collaborate with, I’ve formed many great, unbreakable friendships. There’s one monumental experience that I will always remember. Last year, I performed in Select Band for Vice President Joe Biden’s speech in Ohio. It was an honor to be of service and attend this major event. Ultimately, marching band has taught me leadership, understanding, discipline, responsibility, and dedication; and it’s taught me to have pride in whom I am and what I stand for. I now take on challenges with a positive attitude. Having the memory of Friday night lights shining down on me, united with friends and fellow band members, and hearing the announcer say “Ladies and gentlemen I present to you the Euclid High School Marching Band,” will last forever. |
